Kelli Tennyson’s Story

Single mom of three kids seeks start up funds for family farm.

2012 will mark the beginning of our first growing season on our newly rented farmland in the Sogn valley near Cannon Falls, MN.
This farm will be a family endeavor. My children and I share a love of good healthy food and the outdoors, so as the 2012 growing season begins so will their learning experience of a working farm. Learning how seed, soil, water and sunshine transform into healthy nutritious food.

Our farm’s mission is to grow and distribute healthy nutritious food to local people. As part of that mission we will be partnering with a local food shelf to provide weekly boxes of produce to families in need. Also in alignment with our mission we plan to involve children (from the community and local schools) to come, learn and participate in the hands-on process of growing food from seed to plant to table. We are planning various on-farm and in-school learning activities to share the knowledge of where food comes from and how healthy food = healthy bodies.

This farm has been a dream of mine in the making for a number of years. Continuing in the farming tradition of my grandfather, Hjalmar Hilgren (whose family immigrated here from Sweden and began farming in America in the 1800′s) I plan to create an organic, sustainable, and family friendly way of life for my kids and the community as a whole.

Our farm will produce organic fruits and vegetables. In the future we plan to add pastured poultry and grass-fed roational livestock to our farm. Providing sustainable and hunamely raised meat/egg products with an emphasis on teaching children where our food comes from and our responsibilty to raise those animals with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Start up needs for our farming adventure are ongoing. And I would appreciate any financial help in achieving this goal.

A grant of $5000 dollars would allow me to build a greenhouse/hoophouse and purchase some tools for the farm.
